What can we do to make people with upper limb disabilities employable again? How do we make prosthetic arms economically affordable for everyone? How can we make prosthetics functionally reliable?
At the beginning of 2017, I and Ahsan Iftikhar, an Industrial Engineer specializing in inclusive design, wanted to explore more on the Human forefront of design and enrolled for an online course by ACUMEN and IDEO. For our final challenge, we took the most undermined topics in the society, making People with Disabilities (PWDs) employable again.
Our hypothesis was that PWDs are unemployable because;
In Pakistan, large-scale companies don’t want to hire PWDs because it adds a layer of expense to their operations.
Most of the hospitals in large cities of Pakistan have 7-8 newly registered hand amputation cases every month.
PWDs want to have a facility with fewer technicalities.
We identified that PWDs are unemployable because:
To design a prosthetic for amputees that are reliant only on any manual activity.
Creating ease of functionality and usability.
Empowering them to be more self-reliant.
